Processing Mulch with an Anaconda TD620 Tracked Trommel Screen

Every material processing application presents its own set of challenges, especially when working with organic materials that vary in moisture content, particle size and composition. For mulch producers and composting operations around the world, consistency, efficiency and product quality are essential to meeting customer expectations and maintaining steady production.

Anaconda equipment is engineered to perform reliably in these demanding environments. This In the Field & Around the World spotlight examines how an Anaconda TD620 Tracked Trommel Screen is being used to process mulch, delivering uniform sizing and market ready material while adapting to variable feed conditions.

The Application: Mulch Processing

Mulch processing is inherently variable. Feed material may include shredded wood, bark, green waste or recycled organic material. Changes in weather, seasonal demand and incoming material sources can dramatically impact moisture levels and consistency throughout the year.

Excess moisture or sticky material can lead to blinding and reduced screening efficiency, while dry material may contain a higher concentration of fines. In addition, mulch streams often include oversized wood pieces, roots or debris that must be removed to achieve a clean and consistent finished product.

In this application, the operation required a screening solution capable of maintaining consistent separation despite fluctuating feed conditions. The primary objectives were to achieve reliable throughput, maintain uniform mulch sizing and minimize the need for secondary handling or reprocessing.

The Equipment Solution: Anaconda TD620 Tracked Trommel Screen

To meet these objectives, the operation selected the Anaconda TD620 Tracked Trommel Screen. Designed as a high yield primary screening solution, the TD620 is well suited for organic material applications such as mulch, compost, topsoil and green waste.

At the heart of the TD620 is its 5.5 m (18’) screen drum with a 2.0 m (6’ 7”) diameter. This drum size provides ample screening area while increasing material retention time, allowing effective separation of fines from oversized material at higher production rates.

Interchangeable drum sections allow the TD620 to be configured for different mulch sizing requirements. This flexibility enables producers to adjust the machine to meet changing customer specifications without extensive downtime or equipment modification.

A key feature of the TD620 is its hydraulically adjustable drum angle, ranging from 0–6 degrees, which allows operators to control material retention time within the drum based on varying mulch conditions. Front mounted hydraulic raise system supports this adjustment, enabling more effective screening when processing wetter, stickier material or drier, free flowing feed. A rear hydraulic raise system allows the entire machine to be lifted away from the ground, simplifying loading and unloading for transport and addressing a common operational challenge associated with trommel screens.

The TD620 also features an integrated lift bar system designed to cut through wet or sticky material and reduce buildup inside the drum. This system helps maintain consistent screening performance when processing moist mulch and supports continuous material flow.

Mounted on a tracked chassis, the TD620 offers excellent on site mobility. Operators can reposition the machine to suit evolving processing layouts, stockpile locations or system configurations, allowing the TD620 to operate as a standalone unit or as part of a larger mulch processing setup.

Performance Characteristics in the Field

In real world operation, the Anaconda TD620 delivers consistent screening performance across a wide range of mulch conditions. The extended drum length and controlled material flow support effective separation without excessive breakdown of the feed material.

The TD620 is capable of processing up to 200 tonnes per hour (220 US tons per hour), depending on material characteristics. Its design allows mulch to be screened efficiently in a single pass, reducing reliance on secondary processing equipment and minimizing handling costs.

Key performance benefits include:

  • Uniform finished mulch sizing suitable for retail and bulk landscaping markets
  • Steady material flow that supports consistent production rates
  • Effective removal of oversized wood and debris without excessive reprocessing

When feed material or product requirements change, the TD620’s adjustable configuration allows operators to adapt quickly without prolonged downtime, supporting productivity throughout the season.

Designed for Organic Material Processing

The Anaconda TD620 Tracked Trommel Screen is purpose built for real world organic material processing applications. Its combination of drum size, configuration flexibility and mobility makes it especially well-suited for mulch producers operating under variable conditions.

The machine’s robust construction and practical design support long term operation in demanding environments. Features such as variable speed control, drum load sensing and efficient material handling help reduce wear, improve screening consistency and support operator efficiency.

By balancing capacity, flexibility and durability, the TD620 provides a reliable solution for operations focused on producing high quality mulch while minimizing waste and rehandling.
